Mulled Wine was never a family tradition for me, but after discovering this joy I think it will be a family tradition of mine for many years to come.

I thought I would share my recipe with you, which has changed over the few years I have been making my mulled wine.

1 Navel Orange, roughly peeled and cut in half.

Peel of 1 Lemon

Peel of 1 Lime

150g Caster Sugar

3 Whole Cloves

1 Stick of Cinnamon snapped into quarters

1/2 tsp Nutmeg

1 Vanilla pod split down the middle

2 Star Anise

1 Bottle of Merlot

Put fruit peels and squeeze Navel Orange halves into a large saucepan over medium heat, add the juiced halves into saucepan also. Add cloves, nutmeg, caster sugar, cinnamon and vanilla pod and stir. Add enough red wine to cover the sugar and simmer until the ingredients create a thick syrup. Add star anise and rest of red wine and turn heat down to low. Let this warm for at least 5 minutes until serving. This makes around 5 cups. If you would like it less sweet or to go further simply add another bottle of wine, orange, cinnamon stick and whatever else you fancy.

This is a very warming, sweet recipe that is very very easy to drink, perfect with gingerbread. I like to enjoy this at night with friends, music and candles- it adds the perfect little something. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.
